Commonside

The original district Church of St James, constructed from wood and corrugated iron (and hence known locally at the time as the ‘Tin Church’) was built in 1873, at the junction of what is now Commonside and Narrow Lane. The church was enlarged in 1876 to accommodate an additional 100 worshippers, and a Sunday school was added.

St James was originally constructed at the junction of Commonside and Narrow Lane. Sections of the original wall can still be seen.
